Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA) issued the following statement today in response to the passing of former Congresswoman Cardiss Collins:
"I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Congresswoman Cardiss Collins. As the first African-American woman to serve in Congress from Illinois, and the second woman to serve as Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, Congresswoman Collins paved the way for minority women in Congress. I will cherish the opportunity I had to know and work with her.

The sidewalks are so buckled along parts of Sepulveda Boulevard in Westchester that parents pushing strollers have been spotted veering off the path and into an adjacent bike lane.
Dislodged by massive old ficus tree roots, pieces of sidewalk form peaks that might be attractive to skateboarders, but are less than ideal for pedestrians.
Soon, though, a smoother solution is in store for Westchester.

The multimillion-dollar expansion and facelift of Los Angeles International Airport is running into resistance from some residents.
People who live in the shadow of the airport are speaking out against plans to relocate a runway even closer to their homes.
They aired their concerns at a public meeting on Tuesday night.
"The people who are here today would be willing to go so far as to handcuff themselves to a bulldozer if necessary," declared Westchester resident Dana Cope.

Neighbors of Los Angeles International Airport turned out in force at a public hearing Tuesday night to protest plans to separate the two northern runways by 260 feet for safety and efficiency reasons.
Scores of residents from Westchester and Playa del Rey said the new runways, if built, would increase noise, air pollution and traffic congestion in nearby neighborhoods, further degrading a quality of life that is already heavily impacted by airport operations.
Today, Congresswoman Maxine Waters was sworn in as a Member of the 113th Congress. This marks the beginning of Congresswoman Waters' twelfth term in office. She will now represent California's 43 rd Congressional District (previously 35th) which includes the communities of
Westchester, Playa Del Rey, Lennox, West Athens, West Carson, Harbor Gateway and El Camino Village, and the cities of Gardena, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Lawndale, Lomita and Torrance. Congresswoman Waters released the following statement:

"I am pleased that we were able to reach an agreement that prevents tax hikes from rising on middle class families and ensures that the wealthy will pay their fair share to reduce the deficit. While this agreement is not perfect, it is a step in the right direction to protect families and grow the economy.
