Floor Statement
Thank you very much, Mr. Chairman, and I thank Mr. Van Hollen for yielding me time.
Today I rise in strong opposition to the Republicans' budget, a budget that makes absurd claims to reducing the deficit by repealing crucial government authority to protect our economy. Lest we forget that Lehman Brothers' disorderly bankruptcy sparked the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.
Below is Congresswoman Maxine Waters' one minute statement on the House floor in support of H.R. 41 - the Hurricane Sandy Relief Bill:
Thank you so very much, Congressman Meeks.
I am so proud of the members of this Congress from both sides of the aisle, who have been real advocates, who have been on television, who have been fighting. Members on the opposite side of the aisle have criticized their own leadership for the delay.
Below is Congresswoman Maxine Waters' statement on the House floor regarding the Colombian Free Trade Agreement:
Mr. LEVIN. I yield 2 minutes to the gentlelady from California, Maxine Waters.
Ms. WATERS. I thank my friend from Michigan, Congressman Sander Levin, for the time.
I rise today in strong opposition to H.R. 2218, the Empowering Parents through Quality Charter Schools Act. Although this bill includes some modest improvements to charter school regulation over current laws, it still falls short of ensuring that charter schools are held to high standards for educational quality, accountability and accessibility for all students.
Mr. Speaker, I must congratulate the Tea Party for extorting the deal made in their image, and their image alone. The cuts will be deep, they will be lasting, and they will weaken an already-depressed economy.
What's clear is that the Tea Party is so ideologically driven to kill government that they're willing to kill the private sector, kill jobs, and kill growth in the process.
Congresswoman Maxine Waters spoke out against the many anti-environmental provisions that are within the Interior & Environment Appropriations for FY 2012 (H.R. 2584). Her statement is below:
I rise to oppose the underlying bill and the numerous extreme, anti-environmental riders included therein.
Today on the House floor, Congresswoman Maxine Waters spoke out about the drought currently going on in the horn of Africa. Her thoughts on the current drought is below:
I rise to address the House for five minutes.
The people of the Horn of Africa are facing a devastating crisis. A severe drought has left millions of children, women, and men in Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya and Djibouti malnourished. Many are on the verge of starvation. According to the World Food Program, more than 11 million people in the Horn of Africa require food assistance due to the drought.
Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) joined more than 35 of her Democratic colleagues last night who spoke or submitted statements in the Congressional Record opposing Republican cuts to the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) nutrition program and other critical nutrition programs serving low-income Americans. The cuts are included in H.R. 2112, the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2012. The House is currently considering amendments to H.R. 2112 and may vote on final passage of the bill tomorrow.
