A recently discovered e-mail, which forced postponement of Rep. Maxine Waters' ethics trial, appears to bring the House ethics committee no closer to proving she tried to obtain a U.S. bailout — during the financial crisis — for a bank where her husband owns stock.
Waters, a California Democrat and a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee, was to go on trial Monday before an ethics panel of eight congressional colleagues. She has maintained her innocence, and has been demanding for months that the trial be held.
Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA) entered the following statement into the Congressional Record in remembrance of Jule Sugarman, the founder of the Head Start program. Congresswoman Waters was an assistant teacher and volunteer coordinator with Head Start in Los Angeles:
"MADAM Speaker, I rise to honor the life and work of Jule Sugarman, who passed away earlier this month at the age of 83. I extend my thoughts and prayers to his wife, his children, and his family and friends during this very difficult time.
More than 3,000 residents from across Los Angeles County came together for the 18th annual Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk® to raise awareness and funds to fight Alzheimer's disease.
Families and friends walked side by side with teams from community groups, businesses, schools, assisted living facilities and professional groups, raising more than $680,000 for Alzheimer's disease care and research.

South Bay state Sen. Jenny Oropeza, who seemed set to win a second and final term next month but had been battling a painful abdominal blood clot, died Wednesday. She was 53.
Oropeza, whose district includes Torrance, Carson, El Segundo, Lomita, Westchester, the beach cities and the Harbor Area, died at 9 p.m. Wednesday at Long Beach Memorial Hospital, according to her office.
The former state assemblywoman's name will remain on the Nov. 2 ballot.
