Mr. Speaker, I must congratulate the Tea Party for extorting the deal made in their image, and their image alone. The cuts will be deep, they will be lasting, and they will weaken an already-depressed economy.
What's clear is that the Tea Party is so ideologically driven to kill government that they're willing to kill the private sector, kill jobs, and kill growth in the process.
Congresswoman Maxine Waters spoke out against the many anti-environmental provisions that are within the Interior & Environment Appropriations for FY 2012 (H.R. 2584). Her statement is below:
I rise to oppose the underlying bill and the numerous extreme, anti-environmental riders included therein.
Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), issued the following statement on the passing of Lillian Harkless-Mobley, her friend and iconic South Los Angeles community activist.
"I am heartbroken that one of my closest and dearest friends, Lillian Mobley, has passed away. I worked with Lillian - known throughout South Los Angeles communities as "Ms. Mobley"- for over three decades. We have marched together, participated in protests together, and fought off anyone who attacked our community together. Lillian was my ‘shero.'

Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) issued the following statement today, congratulating the California Science Center in Los Angeles on its selection as one of four institutions nationwide to receive a NASA spacecraft. Even though a last-minute deal staved off a federal government shutdown the night before, thousands of people came to a park near Inglewood on Saturday to warn their elected officials not to cut spending to programs they hold dear.
Led by South Bay Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters, the crowd at Jesse Owens Park chanted slogans, waved signs and shouted their approval for maintaining programs that focus on public housing, after-school programs, affordable health and jobs programs.
