Congresswoman Maxine Waters' office is now accepting submissions for the 2014 Congressional Art Competition. This annual competition celebrates the artistic spirit of high school students across the nation, offering them an opportunity to showcase their talent and compete to have their artwork displayed in the United States Capitol for a full year. Interested student artists must reside or attend a high school in the 43rd Congressional District to compete. This year's submission deadline is Monday, April 25, 2014 at 5:00 PM Pacific Standard Time.

"I extend my deepest condolences and prayers to the families, friends and loved ones of the victims from yesterday's horrific bus crash in Orland, about 100 miles north of Sacramento. I wish those injured a speedy recovery.

To win the competition in Waters' district, contestants must either live in or go to school in the 43rd Congressional District, which includes Gardena, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Lawndale, Lomita and the eastern portion of Torrance.

A group of Los Angeles International Airport baggage handlers arrested last week for allegedly stealing electronics, jewelry and other items from checked luggage were hired by several different companies but had each passed multiple background checks, according to airport officials.
A joint task force of Los Angeles and airport police arrested six baggage handlers on March 27. Fourteen others were detained by investigators, who served 25 search warrants at suspects' homes, LAX Assistant Police Chief Michael Hyams said.

The congresswoman whose district includes Los Angeles International Airport says the Transportation Security Administration's recommendations to improve security are a good first step in addressing concerns after a deadly shooting last year.
Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters says the TSA's recommendation for armed law enforcement to be stationed at screening checkpoints during peak hours addresses a concern about the airport's security protocols that she identified last year.
Today, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43) called for security problems at LAX to be fixed immediately and urged that police officers be stationed at airport passenger screening checkpoints. She submitted her statement at a Congressional field hearing entitled "Lessons from the LAX Shooting: Preparing for and Responding to Emergencies at Airports," which was held at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in her congressional district.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles International Airport was ill prepared for a crisis when a gunman ambushed security officers last year, and the emergency response was hindered by communication problems and poor coordination, according to a report released Tuesday.
The report spotlighted flaws in various divisions of the airport and in systems that were in place, but it did not single out individuals responsible for problems.
