Waters Slams 126 House Republicans for Signing Amicus Brief in Attempt to Overturn Election Results

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43), Chairwoman of the House Committee on Financial Services, issued the following statement slamming the Republican Members of Congress who have signed onto an amicus brief backing a Texas lawsuit to overturn the election results.

“To see 126 Members of Congress, sign onto an amicus brief backing a lawsuit from Texas to the Supreme Court for the purpose of overturning election results in key states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Georgia, hurts. Their actions are an affront of the greatest degree to our democracy, and quite frankly disgusting. While these Members continue to peddle and promote disinformation about “wide-spread” voter fraud, which never happened in the first place, the cuts in our democracy are getting deeper and more painful.

“From the beginning of this election, with lawsuits aiming to stop drive-through voting and mail-in voting, it was clear that Trump and Republicans would do everything in their power to suppress the vote. Now, the numbers have been tallied, the count is in, and the numbers are clear: Trump lost.

“In the state of Georgia, which is led by Republicans, the election results in favor of President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris have been certified not once, not twice, but three times. In the state of Wisconsin, Trump paid for a partial recount of the two largest counties, which by no coincidence also contain the largest percentages of people of color in the state, in an attempt to discount their votes. After more than 800,000 votes were counted for the second time, President-Elect Biden’s lead in Wisconsin actually grew by 87 votes. In the state of Michigan, after inviting state legislators to the White House in hopes that they’d join him in subverting our democratic processes, the Michigan Board of State Canvassers voted, in fact, to certify the vote tally. No matter how many lawsuits Trump and his associates file and how many times they get on the television to lie to the American people, the fact remains that they have produced no evidence and, as the entire world looks on in disbelief, are engaging in a betrayal of our democracy.

“Make no mistake that each and every signature on the amicus brief to the Supreme Court will go down in history as one of the greatest attacks on this country and its people. Let us remember that these are sitting Members of Congress who know and understand that their claims have absolutely no basis, but are choosing to empower the arrogant and dangerous man who, from the Oval Office, is committed to taking every pillar of our democracy down with him.

“On January 20, whether they like it or not, our country will move forward with the will of the people and inaugurate President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris -- two leaders who, unlike Trump, will live up to their oath and work to lift our country and our people out of the rubble. The contempt that these 126 Members hold for our country must not deter us from restoring a belief in facts, a commitment to truth, and our nation’s promise of justice and equality for all.”
