WATCH: Rep. Waters Wishes Labor Rights Icon Dolores Huerta Happy 90th Birthday
LOS ANGELES – On April 10, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43) honored labor and civil rights icon, Dolores Huerta, with a certificate of recognition on her 90th birthday, and thanked her for “her tireless work fighting for the rights of workers, children, women, families, immigrants, and the least of these.”
Dolores Huerta is a co-founder of the National Farmworkers Association (now United Farm Workers), a lifelong activist and community organizer, and a Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient. In light of nationwide social distancing guidelines, Congresswoman Waters presented Dolores Huerta with her certificate virtually using video conference software.
During the videoconference, Congresswoman Waters and Dolores Huerta expressed their profound gratitude to farmworkers, and discussed the ongoing challenges presented by coronavirus to the nation. They also discussed the importance of the 2020 Census, and potential initiatives to protect working families and children that could be included in the next Congressional relief package.
