Maxine Waters Statement regarding the passing of Yolanda King
July 15, 2009
I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Yolanda King, eldest daughter of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and I join with the scores of people across this nation who mourn her loss. Through her theater work, Yolanda created a safe space for dialogue and action on issues of race, class and gender. Using her family's legacy as her muse, Yolanda interpreted our nation's most difficult problems through a lens of imagination and truth, providing us with a template for significant social change through the arts. My prayers are extended to her siblings; sister Reverend Bernice A. King, and brothers Martin Luther King III and Dexter Scott King.
