MEDIA ADVISORY

Washington D.C. – Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), Ranking Member of the House Financial Services Committee, has been a leading advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness and funding for decades.  As a Member of the U.S. Congress, she spearheaded the establishment of the Minority AIDS Initiative (MAI) in 1998 to build the capacity of minority-led organizations to address the disproportionate impact of AIDS on racial and ethnic minorities. The initiative, which was supported by President Bill Clinton, received an initial appropriation of $156 million in FY1999. Due in large part to the congressional leadership of Rep. Waters, the Minority AIDS Initiative now receives about $440 million each year. Early in her public service career, Representative Waters worked with community leaders to raise funding for local minority HIV/AIDS initiatives in Los Angeles and introduced legislation in the California State Assembly to that end. Congresswoman Waters is the keynote speaker at this year's United States Conference on HIV/AIDS in Washington D.C.  Details are below.
