Congresswoman Maxine Waters Statement on the Passing of Sylvester Turner

March 6, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43) issued the following statement upon the news of the death of Congressman Sylvester Turner:

“I am devastated by the sudden passing of my friend and colleague, Congressman Sylvester Turner, who dedicated his life to public service and representing the people of Houston.

“We were great friends for several years before he was recently elected to Congress. His time serving in Congress allowed us to become even closer friends. I've enjoyed spending time with him in our efforts to uplift everyday people.

“From serving in the Texas House of Representatives to becoming the 62nd mayor of Houston, Congressman Turner has spent decades fighting for the people of Houston. During his tenure, he launched several housing initiatives to address chronic homelessness. Because of his leadership, over 25,000 people facing homelessness were housed, and homelessness rates fell by over 60% in Houston.

“I was inspired by his initiatives and had planned for Congressman Turner to serve on a panel about housing next week during our Democratic Issues Conference. I wanted the entire Democratic Caucus to hear the tremendous work he had done in reducing chronic homelessness in Houston.

“I extend my deepest condolences to the Congressman's family, friends, and staff during this difficult time. Let us find solace in the extraordinary life he lived and the incredible amount of work he has done for his community.”
