WASHINGTON Today, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Financial Services, issued the following statement commemorating Labor Day

"Workers are the backbone of this country, and how we take care of America’s backbone determines the overall health of our society and country. This Labor Day, we honor the countless contributions that workers have made across all industries and the role of the Labor Movement in fighting for livable wages, decent benefits, and the dignity of all workers.

Democrats are fighting to protect the right to organize and increase the federal minimum wage. While there is still much to be done, we can also acknowledge that wages are increasing, and unemployment is at a historic low under the Biden administration.

When we talk about taking care of our workers, it also means taking care of those who have retired after committing decades of their lives to America’s workforce. The efforts of Republicans to make funding cuts in Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid are unconscionable. A society’s morals are measured by how it takes care of its seniors, children, and others who need support most.

As we fight to raise wages and protect the right to organize, I'm committed to ensuring that every worker’s voice is heard. Happy Labor Day!"
